The Royle Family star Sue Johnston has opened up on how difficult it is to watch the once hugely-popular comedy series in the years since fellow star Caroline Aherne sadly died. Sue, who played family matriarch Barbara Royle in the iconic show from 1998 to 2012, was on-screen mum to daughter Denise (played by Caroline), and the pair joined show star Ricky Tomlinson as Jim Royle. Sadly, Caroline, who also created the sitcom, died of cancer after a short battle with the disease in 2016.

Celebrity Gogglebox was back on our screens tonight and the show reunited TV royalty. Sitting down to watch the telly was none other than The Royle Family stars Ricky Tomlinson and Sue Johnston.

Gogglebox. The Lionheart hitmaker, 28, has signed up to the hit Channel 4 show alongside his dad. The father and son duo will make their first onscreen appearance on Friday 16 June alongside celeb favourites Rylan Clark and his mum Linda and Shaun Ryder and his Happy Mondays bandmate Bez.

As Eurovision kicked off in spectacular style with the first Semi-finals on Tuesday night, fans across the UK were left feeling more than a little emotional when the late Paul O’Grady appeared in the show’s opening video. Starring in the Welcome to Liverpool video, the Birkenhead-born star, famous for his drag persona Lily Savage appeared on screen to flash his trademark smile alongside a clear twinkle in his eye.

Weeks after his unexpected death Paul O’Grady has appeared on screen once more, in a special short film to mark the opening of the Eurovision Song Contest and welcome the world to Liverpool.The late comedian and TV stalwart, originally from Birkenhead, Merseyside, was one of a host of celebs to take part in the film to show his pride in his home region – which is taking on competition hosting duties in 2023 on behalf of Ukraine.The project was one of the last things Paul filmed before his death, and his posthumous appearance has been approved by his family and friends. He died “unexpectedly but peacefully” on March 28 at the age of 67.

Earlier this week, we reported Peter Martin, 82, had died. In Emmerdale, he was known to millions as Len Reynolds. He played the character between 2001 and 2007.

Brookside fans have been left delighted after spotting its stars reuniting 19 years after the series ended.The Liverpool-set soap debuted in November 1982 and showcased several exciting and controversial storylines in the two decades it aired, before the show bowed out for good in 2003. Remember how we all used to gather on the sofa to laugh, cry and truly identify with The Royle Family? This hugely-loved show really was one of those once-in-a-blue-moon sitcoms that managed to unite the generations - from your comedy-disliking grandma all the way through to that surly uncle who usually only watches sport. Shot through with a real warmth and easy-going humour, audiences instantly just clicked with this most down-to-earth of familes.Tuning in to follow their trials and tribulations almost became something of a ritual, helping propel the programme from strength to strength through the late 90s and beyond.

BBC sitcom The Royle Family was David and Denise's first child and starred in season three of the series - but two decades on the actor who played him James Matthew-Hughes is all grown up.James' character was born on Christmas Day back in 1999 and his christening day and first birthday were featured in the series which told the story of a working class family living in Manchester.These days he stars in numerous stage shows after training to be a musical theatre actor.According to his CV, James is able to do a variety of accents and is also skilled in dance jazz, tap, ballet and period dance as well as being a classically trained singer.After growing up, James got a degree in theatre arts and has starred in musicals such as Crazy for You and Me And My Girl at the London Palladium.James played David for a year before Harry Cash took it on 2006 for the reunion episode of the show The Queen of Sheba, where he was seen as a young child with his father looking like the spitting image of his dad, with the pair matching T-shirts.After the tragic death of its creator and Denise star Caroline Aherne back in 2016, many cast member have said they would not like to see the series brought back to TV screens without her.Ricky Tomlinson, who played Denise's dad Jim in the sitcom said on Loose Women in 2020: "Not for me, if it’s not broke don’t try and fix it."She was wonderful.

Prior to the launch of First Dates, the ex-narrator had a hugely successful career, and has continued to do so long after leaving the dating show.
