A major prison riot has taken place tonight, said to be over a ban on cigarettes, leading to an enormous fire at a Russian jail with 1,300 inmates.
The blaze tore through blocks of Strict Penal Colony Number 15, near Angarsk in Siberia, with convicts fearing they faced death. “When the fire subsides, we will have been killed,” said an inmate as the inferno raged, implying the protesting prisoners would face punishment after the riot.
The jail houses murderers, rapists, drug dealers, and robbers, with most inmates being criminals who have reoffended. Human rights sources said the incident was triggered with a row over a ban on cigarettes and the punishment of prisoners.
