Granddad-of-six Stuart Whittingham, 57, stepped in and attempted to cool down the situation on Sunday February 9, according to the Liverpool Echo.
The 33-year-old then turned his attention to Mr Whittingham and began picking on him before a flurry of punches stopped him in his tracks.
But after losing the fight, cowardly Carney waited for his victim outside the boozer with a hammer. He repeatedly smacked him in the head, some as he lat on the floor.
