Diego Maradona once claimed that he had ‘no idea’ who infamous drug lord Pablo Escobar was before meeting the Colombian for a prison party.
Escobar was the feared leader of the Medellin Cartel, amassing a net worth of more than £45billion at the time of his death having been dubbed the ‘King of Cocaine’.
At one point, Escobar was actually jailed by Colombia for his crimes, though was able to negotiate a plea deal that allowed him to serve his sentence in a jail he was allowed to design himself.The prison was named La Catedral, and was more like a hotel than jail, as it contained a bar, jacuzzi, pool tables and even a five-a-side football pitch.The kingpin was a huge fan of football, with stars of the game invited to visit him at La Catedral, including Maradona.The Argentine superstar was idolised by Escobar and he was invited to appear at La Catedral for a huge appearance fee while he served a 15-month doping ban for taking cocaine at Napoli.
