Russian army recruiters are targeting homeless men as Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine enters its seventh month, according to horrifying reports.

Putin's mobilisation efforts have so far seen him raise the minimum age for recruits and turn to Russia's prison population.

Now, while a huge Ukrainian counter-offensive is underway, Russia's oldest homeless charity claims military officials have targeted homeless shelters in St Petersburg's Frunzensky district.READ MORE: Anonymous hackers take over Russia's largest taxi firm and cause massive traffic jam An unnamed source from charity Nochlezhka told the Rotunda news service: “[A recruiter] offered to hand out leaflets explaining that men were to be called to serve under contracts.“The duty officer [at the shelter] did not allow the leaflets to be handed out.” Speaking to the Bumaga news channel, charity spokeswoman Tatyana Bazhenova insisted that Nochlezhka will not help Putin's recruiters replenish their ranks with people from her shelters. "We have always been out of religion and out of politics, so we can't help in this matter," she said.

Rotunda said on Telegram that St Petersburg city administrators confirmed a recruiter “using his own initiative” had tried to recruit from the homeless population there. It was also reported that Nochlezhka were later contacted via email to discuss sharing information about distributing army leaflets to those in the charity's shelters. The Russian Defence Ministry has previously denied that any “mobilisation activities” are taking place, despite mounting reports to the contrary.
