Covid causes heart damage in many patients, alarming research suggests

Alarming new research has found many Covid patients tested had some form of heart damage. UK scientists looking at people admitted to hospital with severe forms of the disease and raised levels of a protein called troponin noted a majority had heart damage at discharge.

Troponin is released into the blood when the heart muscle is injured, and it is thought that up to 40 per cent of Covid-19 patients have raised levels of this protein.

The researchers said the findings, published in the European Heart Journal, raise hope that this injury can be prevented through careful monitoring and targeted treatments.
