United States college basketball teams secure the most exciting young athletes by offering them a glimpse of the high-life. Prospective college athletes can expect expense-paid trips to campuses where they are convinced by coaches to join their basketball teams.

The youngsters are often greeted and given tours by hosts, usually attractive females, who promise stardom, impressive facilities and a variety of other fun experiences. But the University of Louisville, Kentucky, took it several steps too far in the 2010s after prospective basketball players were found to have been tempted into joining through being offered alcohol and sexual encounters with prostitutes. The Louisville Cardinals became engulfed in a wild sex scandal in October 2015, when former escort Katina Powell revealed the Louisville Cardinals men's basketball team's dirty secrets.

Powell detailed recruiting parties held between 2010 and 2014 in her book 'Breaking Cardinal Rules: Basketball and the Escort Queen'.She admitted to have been paid $10,000 (£8,000) to supply dancers and sex workers for parties attended by prospective athletes and current players with the primary aim of luring recruits to join Louisville's programme.

The parties took place inside Billy Minardi Hall, the on-campus dorm which housed its basketballers and other athletes, along with other off-campus sites. At the heart of the controversy was former Louisville graduate and at the time director of basketball operations Andre McGee, who masterminded the sex parties with Powell.
