Ukraine to help in the war against Vladimir Putin's invading Russian forces. Defence Secretary Ben Wallace has confirmed that an unspecified number of Mastiff heavily armoured vehicles will be sent to the frontline as the war rages on.
It is understood that the vehicles, which have a maximum speed of 90kph, will be stripped of sensitive equipment with British troops sent to a country neighbouring Ukraine to provide training, UK Defence Journal reported.
The 23-ton Mastiff, which has been described as the Army’s fortress on wheels, is used for transporting troops and can be armed with a 7.62 mm GPMG, 12.7 mm heavy machine gun or 40 mm grenade machine gun.The Mastiff offers protection from mine and ballistic threats for eight troops and two crew.
The first Mastiff arrived at the Afghanistan front in December 2006 and was also used for patrolling in Basra, Iraq. The vehicle is fitted with increased seat armour to protect soldiers when faced with an impact and was previously thought to be "invincible" until a Taliban bomb killed three British soldiers riding in it, in Afghanistan in 2013.
