UK says Mark Zuckerberg and social media companies could face prison under new laws

Mark Zuckerberg and other social media bigwigs could face time in the clink if they don't comply with strict new online safety laws in the UK.UK Culture and Digital Secretary Nadine Dorries said that social media companies will be forced to act on illegal content as part of the new Online Safety Bill.

Facebook, Instagram and other platforms will have to act on content that includes revenge porn, fraud, illegal drugs and weapons, the promotion of suicide, sexual exploitation or people smuggling—or face the consequences.When asked whether Mark Zuckerberg and other social media executives could face prison sentences if they don't comply, Ms Dorries said: "Absolutely."Dorries told the Times Radio that the bill would be "notice to the online platforms to say here it is, we're letting you know what it is now, so start doing what you need to do."However, Andy Burrows, head of child safety online policy at the NSPCC, argued this was not the case.He said: “Despite the rhetoric, the Government’s current proposals mean tech bosses wouldn’t be personally liable for the harmful effects of their algorithms or failing to prevent grooming, and could only be prosecuted for failing to supply information to the regulator.

The plans are part of the Online Safety Bill, which will also force porn sites to check the age of their users to ensure children and teens aren't exposed to explicit content.Porn sites will have to use credit card information or government data to verify the ID of their users.

However, the proposals have proved controversial amid fears that it could be used to track users' porn habits.While the government has insisted the measures should not involve storing data that isn't relevant to someone's age, sites like Pornhub.
