Labour MSP. Katie Clark MSP, who was political secretary to former leader Jeremy Corbyn, called for the UK’s nuclear deterrent to be scrapped and for workers at the Faslane site to be given “full income protection”.
Clark spoke out after the Ministry of Defence denied it had made contingency plans to remove the Trident nuclear submarine base from Scotland to the US or France in the event of Scottish independence.Clark, who was previously Labour MP for North Ayrshire and Arran constituency across the Firth of Clyde from the Faslane submarine base, is a long-time opponent of nuclear weapons.She said a permanent furlough could end the nuclear programme without Scotland separating from the UK.
