Chipping Norton and the surrounding countryside has long been the bolt-hole of Britain's wealthy elite.Just a few hours from London, the Oxfordshire area offers the kind of rural setting and farm-style homes beloved by celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Jeremy Clarkson, Amanda Holden and former Prime Minister David Cameron.

Some split their time between mansions in the capital and the most lavish country homes the Cotswolds has to offer. In the village of Chadlington, former Top Gear host Clarkson is building a more than 12,000 sq ft, six-bedroom property on his estate, including a basement cinema and a walled garden.

But even they might raise an eyebrow at the plans for a new 60-acre property near the village of Ramsden. Designs for St John’s House have been inspired by the mansion that plays host to the wild parties in F Scott Fitzgerald's Great Gatsby - most recently brought to life by the Hollywood film starring Leonardo Dicaprio and Carey Mulligan. It promises to be the largest stately home built in Britain for more than 100 years, but comes at a huge cost. The land, and planning permission including designs drawn up by architect Professor Robert Adam is on the market for £20m in a listing by Savills estate agents.

Sotheby's International Realty has also been drafted in to conduct an auction of the site. Once finished, the estate could be worth more than £100m, according to reports.
