Stewartry RFC under-16s win Scottish West Regional Plate in thrilling fashion

A large delighted crowd watched Stewartry youngsters lift the Scottish West Regional Plate on Sunday.A brilliant performance from the Under 16s saw them see off Marr College in the final at the Greenlaw.The visitors had the best of the early exchanges, scoring a converted try just eight minutes in.But Stewartry dug deep and held out the next three exchanges, turning the tide in the 18th minute with a cracking try in the corner.It was end to end exciting rugby with Stewartry seeing most of the ball for the rest of the half but no points were scored, 5-7.The pace was kept up after the restart with Marr scoring their second try which was unconverted.However, their discipline was beginning to slip and twelve minutes in, after four infringements and a deliberate elbow to the face, the referee produced a red card.That was the turning point as Stewartry made the most of their man advantage.Marr’s discipline was out of the window as they gave away penalty after penalty.Seventeen minutes in and Stewartry went over the whitewash for their second try.The added conversion levelled the scores at 12 each.Ten minutes of seemingly endless Marr penalties gave the Blacks their chance and they took it, slotting the kick to make it 15-12, and held on for victory.A spokesman for the Under 16s said: “It was amazing.
