South Ayrshire Council’s grounds maintenance team are causing a "public health risk" by the way they trim municipal patches of grass, it is claimed. One dog walker in Ayr claims to have witnessed aluminium cans of soft drinks and hard plastics being ‘shredded’ into “dangerous shards” by a council-deployed tractor and grass cutting attachment. And he reckons the shards left behind by the team could potentially be harmful to children and dogs. The resident said: “This is a common council practice as I’ve witnessed it before.

They hadn’t bothered clearing the litter before commencing.“This led to metal cans and hard plastic bottles getting cut up into dangerous shards.
This is a public health risk to both people, especially children and dogs, as they regularly use the area for walking and playing.”The Ayrshire Live app is available to download now.Get all the local news in your area – plus features, football news and the latest on the coronavirus crisis – at your fingertips 24/7.The free download features the latest breaking news and exclusive stories while you can customise your page with the sections that matter to you.The Ayrshire Live app is available to download now on iOS and Android.Ayrshire Live contacted South Ayrshire Council and put the resident’s concerns to them. And in a statement they said: “We strive to uphold the highest standards of cleanliness across South Ayrshire.
