Alex Neil has announced he will stand down as an MSP at next year's Holyrood election. The ex- health secretary is the latest former member of Alex Salmond's Cabinet to step away from the Scottish Parliament, with Stewart Stevenson and Roseanna Cunningham having previously revealed their intention to quit in 2021.
Neil was first elected as an MSP on the list vote in 1999 and unsuccessfully challenged for the SNP leadership the following year, losing out to John Swinney.
He won the Airdrie and Shotts constituency for the Nationalists at the 2011 Holyrood election and was returned for the same seat in 2016.In a statement today, Neil said: "It has been a privilege and a pleasure to have been an MSP for the last 21 years, especially since 2011.
