Deaf Awareness Week runs until May 12 and is an annual event aimed at promoting understanding and raising awareness on the challenges faced by people with hearing loss issues.

According to the latest research from the Royal National Institute for Deaf People, some 12 million adults in the UK are deaf, have hearing loss or tinnitus.

That figure includes around 10.1m people in England, 1m in Scotland, 610,000 in Wales and 320,000 in Northern Ireland. However, despite the large number of people living with hearing issues, just 36,946 adults in Great Britain are receiving support worth up to £737.20 every four-week payment period through Personal Independence Payments (PIP) or Adult Disability Payment (ADP).

It’s important to be aware that people over State Pension age with hearing loss cannot claim these benefits, but may be eligible for Attendance Allowance.
