Snow maps show 20inches of snow to lash Brits during -5C Arctic plunge next week

snow next week as the UK is on course to be battered by an Atlantic storm.Odds for snowfall on Valentine's Day have been slashed following new weather charts that show the Scottish Highlands to be in line for a blanketing from Monday.The highest points of Scotland may be the first place we see snow next week but it is unlikely to be the last.

Data by WXCharts shows those living in northern England and north Wales can also expect a smattering next Saturday. According to the maps, up to 50cm (20inches) of snow is set to hit northern Scotland on February 19, days after an icy dive in temperatures throughout the week.During the bitter plunge in mercury, it could be as low as -5C for Inverness and Aberdeenshire and -2C for Glasgow on the weekend.Many missing out on snow across Britain can still look forward to below-freezing temperatures and very strong winds, the Met Office reports.Tuesday is expected to start with a drier, milder, and brighter morning than Monday but rain will soon make its way eastward and south from the northwest.Wintry showers are possible in the far north of the UK, where temperatures remain rather cold.

Throughout the remaining week and beyond, unsettled weather is likely to continue. Frequent showers and longer spells of rain are likely for most, with a risk of snow mainly over high ground in the north.

Western hills and upslopes will likely see the heaviest rainfall, with the southeast enjoying the driest conditions, according to the Met Office.Strong winds will continue with a risk of gales, especially across the north and west, with severe gales in some coastal areas at times.
