Manchester United shirt, but Sir Alex Ferguson wasn't convinced by the star back in the day.Ferguson may have overseen some of the brightest young talent to ever play for United during his 27-year stint at Old Trafford, but he couldn't have been more wrong on Scholes.
The Englishman broke into Ferguson's side back in 1993 and became a major part of United's midfield shortly after the legendary manager won his first Premier League title.Scholes went on to win 25 trophies under Ferguson as United dominated England for two decades, and the midfielder has since been named by former team-mates such as Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand as the best player they played with.
But Ferguson almost gave up on the star whilst he was in the United youth academy.Although technically gifted, physically Scholes was lacking as the star only grew to be 5 feet 6, although as we later learned with Lionel Messi, size isn't everything.
And Ferguson quickly learned that too, after his savage first verdict on the future Premier League great.According to FourFourTwo, when Ferguson first saw Scholes play for United's youth team, he turned to former assistant boss Jim Ryan and said: "He's got no chance, he's a midget." However, he was quickly made to eat his words, as Scholes went on to become one of the finest midfielders the Premier League has ever seen.According to Ferguson, it's a running joke that continues to haunt him to this day, as he later admitted just how wrong he was about Scholes.
