WhatsApp scam decided to turn the tables on her would-be thief, in a rare case of the scammer being the one left red-faced. In recent weeks, a message on the platform purporting to be from a victim's child has been circulating, with many people falling for it.The method starts with the scammer sending a message from an unknown number.

The message appears to be from your son or daughter and explains they’ve broken or lost their phone.This message is followed up by another supposedly on behalf of the child, requesting payment for an urgent bill.But before one UK mum was even asked that question, her daughters informed her of the scam and she was able to get one over on the perpetrators.

After saying they broke their phone and had lost all their files, but got back in contact with their 'mum' via a new sim, the scammer was asked by the woman: "Hang on, is this Julie or Ben?"It was Julie texting, apparently, but this woman doesn't have a child with that name. "That's funny because I don't have a daughter called Julie," she responded.

Her actual daughter, called Molly, revealed on Twitter it was a ploy to use those names in a bid to catch the scammer out. "Told her to make up some random names and see if they fell for it and they did.
