Queen's former chaplain has slammed Prince Harry for being "idiotic" following his brief visit to see the Queen to check on her safety.

Reverend Canon Gavin Ashenden made the remarks after the Duke of Sussex told Today's show host Hoda Kotb about his catch up with his grandmother on the way to Hague. He said: "Being with her, it was great.

It was just so nice to see her, she's on great form."She's always got a great sense of humour with me and I'm just making sure she's protected and got the right people around her."Both Meghan and I had tea with her, so it was really nice to catch up with her."His comments faced backlash this week after royal watchers highlighted that the Duke chose to quit as a senior working Royal in 2020 and move to California.Speaking to GB News, Gavin Ashenden said Harry has turned himself into a "national jester" by suggesting the monarch needed his protection. He said: "But I think one of the most interesting things to come out of the news of late is something that we want to laugh about. "Every country needs a jester or somebody to make them laugh and I think dear Prince Harry has made himself into our national jester. "And by coming back and explaining the reason that he doesn't need national security because his grandmother needs his personal protection.

That is such a wonderfully grossly idiotic thing to say."In response to the ex-chaplain's comments, one Twitter user said: "Dr Ashenden calling Prince Harry 'Idiotic' was right on the money."Another commented: "Dr Ashenden speaks for many of us!"
