Poor white youngsters in 'left behind' towns much more likely to miss out on university

Young white people from disadvantaged towns or those on free school meals are least likely to go to university, new research has found.

Youngsters from England's coastal towns and former industrial heartlands are being "left behind" when it comes to access to university education, according to the Office for Students.

The OfS director for fair access and participation, Chris Millward, said young people on free meals or from disadvantaged areas comprised 92% of those in the bottom fifth of those likely to attend university.
