Police have issued a warning following a spate of burglaries targeting expensive family gold. The thefts, typically carried out in teams of two or three, target homes with the high-value gold jewellery, often bought as wedding gifts in Asian communities and passed down through generations, GMP said.
The force confirmed that the incidents, that have spiked in recent weeks, are being carried out in groups, who break into houses when families have left to attend evening prayers.
The thieves are entering through open windows or smashing them with bricks. One victim, who wishes to remain anonymous, in Rochdale, had his home robbed while on a pilgrimage to Mecca.
