Horror at the pumps as fuel prices soar past £2 a litre - and it won't stop there
petrol prices are set to crash through the £2 per litre barrier across the country.Yesterday saw the first few petrol stations hit that mark, with one in Gateshead hitting 202.9p per litre. The wholesale oil price rose by around 6% in the last week, and shows no signs of slowing down. And yesterday's jump, which saw pump prices go up 2p a litre in just one day, was the biggest daily rise in 17 years. This could see a family facing the shocking cost of around £100 per tank if they want to fill up.The shocking rise has seen the RAC call for “radical government intervention”, which has so far seen just a 5p cut in fuel duty implemented in March – which has already been engulfed by further rises.RAC spokesman Simon Williams said: “More radical government intervention is urgently needed, whether that’s in the form of a further reduction in fuel duty or a VAT cut.“As it is, drivers surely won’t be able to cope unless something is done to help.“This is fast becoming a national crisis for the country’s 32 million car drivers as well as countless businesses.”And AA fuel price spokesman Luke Bosdet said: “Shock and awe is the only way to describe what has been happening at the pump during the half-term break.“Little wonder that nearly half of drivers stayed at home for the Jubilee extended bank holiday.“The forces behind the surge have been oil jumping back above 120 US dollars a barrel for the first time since late March, combined with petrol commodity prices being boosted by summer motoring demand.”The government's response came by way of Housing Secretary Michael Gove, who claimed on Sky News this morning (June 9) that Chancellor Rishi Sunak is “on the side of those people who are struggling".Speaking on Sky News, he said: “The

Dan Walker reacts to BBC Breakfast interview with Michael Gove 'Trying to work out what ha
Dan Walker questioned Levelling Up and Housing Secretary Michael Gove's behaviour during an interview, which some claimed was erratic. Gove broke into different accents on numerous occasions as he tried to reassure the public that the government was "constantly" looking at ways to relieve the financial crisis."We're constantly looking at ideas in order to make sure that we relieve the pressure on people who are facing incredibly tough times," he claimed to Dan on BBC Breakfast. However, he insisted: "That doesn't mount up to an emergency budget, which some people immediately thought that it did."Accusing the media of exaggerating, he added: "It is an example of some commentators chasing their own tails."[They are] trying to take a statement that is commonsensical, turning it into a major capital letters news story, and in fact when the Treasury quite rightly say 'Calm down', then people, instead of recognising that they've over-inflated the story in the first place, then say 'Ooh, this is clearly a split'," he added.During the interview, Gove appeared to speak at a faster than usual pace and broke into different accents repeatedly, from Northern English to American.A puzzled Dan announced to over 756,000 followers: "I’ve watched our interview back a few times now."Still trying to work out what happened."He added on the app: "I hope Mr Gove is ok."His post prompted viewers to blast that the Housing Secretary was "out of his depth"."I see this as Mr Gove taking the mickey out of journalists and media celebrities, and quite naturally they don’t like it and are making a big thing of it," @KevRic_EvaWre wrote."He's horribly out of his depth and clearly being undone by the pressure.

'He said Brexit would REMOVE VAT!' Susanna Reid launches Twitter attack on Gove after vow
Susanna Reid, 51, has fumed at Michael Gove on Twitter after his appearance on Good Morning Britain today.Secretary of State for Levelling Up Michael Gove was given a dressing down by the presenter on the ITV news programme. She tore into the minister over the cost-of-living crisis and demanded to know why he would not remove VAT on energy bills to help citizens. On Twitter, Susanna continued her anger against Gove as she typed: “In 2016 Michael Gove wrote a newspaper article saying VAT on fuel bills hit the poorest hardest & we should Brexit to remove VAT. “In 2022 he says removing VAT would help the wealthiest most and we shouldn’t do it.”The mother-of-two also shared a video clip from GMB showing her grilling of Gove, as she questioned why he campaigned for removing VAT on energy bills previously, but was now not supportive of the change. However, some of her followers also seemed frustrated that it appeared Gove was unable to fully answer Susanna’s questions without interruption.@BcfcDavid wrote: “During the whole 1 min 6 seconds of this video, there were only 13 seconds where you didn't speak or talk over him.Seriously, what's the point? Hold ministers to account but let us listen to what they have to say.”(sic)@zx_spectrum_30 remarked: “Whilst removing VAT for everyone would be lovely, the tax just gets raised somewhere else so I would like the rich to carry on paying it, but have some means of removing/rebating/supporting those that really need it.

How come only now there's incentives to encourage people to help refugees?"Mica's comments were immediately praised by fans, with many taking to Twitter in a flurry to show their support for her.One user wrote: "Mica talking truth there!"While another added: "Good on Mica for calling out the hypocrisy regarding refugees."A third wrote: "Mice speaking sense."While Mica was praised for her comments, elsewhere in the episode she left viewers in hysterics after realising she was caught in the ultimate fashion blunder. She was seen lying on her back with her legs in the air while Marcus attempted to help her pull up her jeans. However, the thing that truly had fans laughing was Mica's warnings to Marcus as she told him to "never tell anyone" that he was forced to help her get her jeans on.She said: "If you ever tell anyone you know that I've got to go through this...

Bloke makes worst throw ever when food for protesters ends up landing on police van
London mansion. The £25 million mansion in the posh corner of Belgrave Square, near Knightsbridge, was "liberated" by a group of squatters who climbed up to the portico above the entrance. They draped several banners from the balconies with messages to tell Russia's president Vladimir Putin "go f*** yourself" and calling the Russian oligarchs "power breed parasites".When the man lets go of the bag of what it is claimed to be rice cakes, it soars through the air only to get blown back onto the roof of the police van.He quickly covers his face in embarrassment and tries to leave the scene as an officer turns to him.Another video then showed him being surrounded by police and given what seems like a stern talking to.Greg wrote in his Twitter post: "A group of protesters have occupied Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska’s London mansion."Surreal scenes as they hold a press conference from the balcony, with reporters behind a police cordon."Someone now getting a telling-off from police after trying to throw a bag of food up to the occupiers, and landing it on top of a police van."All that’s behind it is a packet of rice cakes that weren’t thrown powerfully enough."For more stories from the Daily Star, sign up to one of our newsletters here. The protesters reportedly broke into Deripaska's home just 24 hours after cabinet minister Michael Gove told the BBC’s Sunday (March 13) Morning programme that the UK properties of sanctioned Russians could be used by the government. He said: "There’s quite a high legal bar to cross and we’re not talking about permanent confiscation."But we are saying: 'You’re sanctioned, you’re supporting Putin, this home is here, you have no right to use or profit from it – and more than that, while you are not
