During Muir’s tenure at “World News Tonight,” the ABC program has done something most TV programs cannot do in the streaming era: Add new linear viewers. Yet in recent weeks one of the evening-news program’s competitors has nibbled at its lead in a crucial audience category.

Her show, she says, isn’t that. “We are going to respect your trust, your interest, your time,” she says. “We are going to give you the top stories of the day, but we are also going to give you something else.”
