The brother of French filmmaker Sophie Toscan du Plantier has recalled the agonising moment his sister’s neighbour confirmed she had been found beaten to death near an isolated house in West Cork.
Bertrand Bouniol said Sophie’s neighbour, Josephine Hellen, was screaming down the phone and, at first, he could not understand what was happening until he asked her directly: ‘Was it Sophie?’ In the first part of a three-part Netflix series on the 1996 murder, released today, the family recalled their panic after it was announced on the news that a French woman had been killed in Cork.
Sophie’s mother, Marguerite Bouniol, told the documentary crew that she told the others she believed her 39-year-old daughter had been murdered.
