Millions will be left facing crippling uncertainty over Christmas if the Government fails to extend the £20-a-week boost to Universal Credit, ministers have been warned.
A coalition of nearly 60 charities and senior bishops said it would be a “terrible mistake” to cut the £20 uplift, which was introduced this year to support six million people facing hardship due to the pandemic.
Chancellor Rishi Sunak failed to commit to extending the temporary top-up, which is due to end in spring 2021, at last week’s Spending Review.
Some 6.2 million families will be hit by £1,040 a year cut to their incomes overnight if the uplift is scrapped, the group warned.
