McDonald's will slam shut 850 of its restaurants in Russia as backlash to Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine. The massive move which will see civilians unable to order a Big Mac and fries any time soon is one of the latest international sanctions on Russia.

Restaurants will remain closed as a temporary measure but it is as yet unknown as to when they will be back in business as the world reacts in fury to Putin's war.In a statement the American fast food giant's CEO Chris Kempczinski said: "The conflict in Ukraine and the humanitarian crisis in Europe has caused unspeakable suffering to innocent people.

As a System, we join the world in condemning aggression and violence and praying for peace."McDonald's added that it has continued to pay its Ukrainian employees their full salaries since the invasion left the nation in crisis and the firm has donated £3.8million to its Employee Assistance Fund. They add that its support from Ronald McDonald House Charities for relief efforts led by the International Red Cross in the region is ongoing. In a lengthy message first sent to McDonald's employees explaining its drastic actions, the restaurant said it employs 62,000 people in Russia "who have poured their heart and soul" into the golden arches brand. In addition to those who will be out of work as a consequence of its government's actions, millions of Russian customers each day "who count on McDonald’s" will be without the famous US cuisine.

As the brutal bloodshed and displacement continues in Ukraine, McDonald's said it is impossible to give a re-opening date with supply issues also impacting restaurants across the border in Russia.
