A man who had sex with a schoolgirl has been spared jail after a judge was convinced he would lead a 'law-abiding life'. Michael Thornton, of Wakefield, West Yorkshire, now 32, preyed on a 13-year-old girl after telling her he was 16 - when he was actually 22.
A judge said he felt able to spare Thornton jail as the case represented an 'exceptional set of circumstances'. The judge also heard Thornton has since turned his life around and rehabilitated himself, the Manchester Evening News reports.
Prosecutors told how the 13-year-old girl had accepted a friend request on Facebook from Thornton. He told her she was 'beautiful'.
