A hiker who desperately needed a kidney transplant managed to bag a new one on Twitter. Jamie Bowen faced years of disruptive dialysis unless he got the life-changing op.

And against the odds the 47-year-old managed to find himself a willing organ donor on social media. Geoff Crowther, from Hayfield, Derbys, volunteered after the pair connected on Twitter through a shared love of hiking.

Jamie, who lives 216 miles away in Neath, South Wales, said: “He gave me back my life, so I’ve got a responsibility now to look after myself. “I owe it to him to keep healthy and look after the kidney.” Jamie has had a history of health problems since he was diagnosed with the chronic bowel condition Crohn’s disease aged 18.
