A man committed extreme acts of self harm before taking his own life in prison while serving an indeterminate sentence. Tommy Nicol killed himself back in 2015 six years into an Imprisonment for Public Protection (IPP) sentence.
While many people locked up on the now-abolished sentence committed violent and sexual convictions, Tommy was jailed for a string of lower-level crimes that culminated in a robbery.
The effect of not knowing if he would ever be allowed out of prison started eating away at the young man. After six years inside and having failed to convince a parole board it was safe to release him, Tommy's mental health took a serious slide.
