The fight for justice for a mum who killed herself after her benefits were stopped has taken a major step forward. Jodey Whiting’s family have been granted permission to apply at the High Court for an ultra-rare second inquest into her death.

Jodey, from Stockton-on-Tees, took her own life in February 2017 days after her benefits were stopped for missing a fit-for-work test.

A watchdog found multiple failings and ordered the DWP to apologise and pay her family £10,000 in compensation in 2019. But the original inquest in May 2017 lasted just an hour and did not consider the DWP’s role or otherwise in her death, her lawyers say.
