London Marathon chiefs have revealed that they are to stage an elite-only race after Covid concerns ruled out a mass-participation event.
World record holder Eliud Kipchoge will take on Kenenisa Bekele around 19.8 laps of an enclosed looped course in London’s St James’ Park on October 4.
Elite races for women and para athletes including David Weir will also take place, but the 45,000 ‘fun’ runners will not be permitted in the secure biosphere.
Instead organisers are encouraging them to run elsewhere with the promise of a London Marathon soundtrack to accompany them and an official finishers’ medal for those reaching their 26.2-mile goal. “This is a day of sadness, but it's also a day of certainty,” said London Marathon chief Hugh
