UFC star Robert Whittaker almost died with collapsed bowel hours after weigh-in
UFC star Robert Whittaker came close to death in 2019 when his bowel collapsed hours before a title fight.The New Zealander appeared completely fit and healthy during the weigh-in for his UFC Middleweight championship bout against Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 234, but his mood changed after experiencing sharp pains in his stomach.Little did he know, he was about to face the fight of his life."Almost immediately after I started re-hydrating and refuelling [following the weigh-in], I started to get these sharp pains in my stomach," Whittaker recalled."That’s the scenario, and it progressively got worse."Initially, Whittaker and his team thought it was just food poisoning and were reluctant to even cancel his match, but things quickly took a turn for the worse."When I was in that amount of pain, I didn’t care about anything except making the pain go away," Whittaker added."I was worried, I wanted to re-hydrate and I was hoping it would pass and I’d be able to fight, blah, blah, blah, blah."But the pain reached a level where I didn’t care about anything except making the pain go away."The problem was diagnosed as an abdominal hernia and a twisted and collapsed bowel, and Whittaker was warned that if his intestines burst, he could be killed.Are there enough safety checks in UFC?
