The explorer, writer and presenter of Walking the Nile went for the elephants but fell for the whole country I’ve been all over Africa, but last summer I went to Botswana for the first time and I fell in love with it straight away.

I had a mission in mind (for my next television series), which was to follow the biggest annual African elephant migration – from the salt pans of the Kalahari to the Okavango Delta – on foot, a route that covered 650 miles.

Makgadikgadi Pans is one of the largest salt pans in the world and it’s the most amazing place. It’s bonkers – three million years ago it was under water, now it’s salt pans.
