Kate Middleton ‘saved’ Prince William from girls trying to flirt with him on nights out by pretending to be his girlfriend before they got together, a pal has revealed.

The future Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were close friends when they studied at St Andrews University in Scotland. But a month after he enrolled in 2001, the prince was hit on by a girl at a party and couldn’t shake her off, the Mirror reports.Sensing the awkwardness, Kate jumped in and put her arms around him and pretended they were together to fend off the unwanted attention.

The clever trick was revealed by the couple’s friend Laura Warshauer who spoke to royal expert Katie Nicholl for her book Kate: The Future Queen.

She said: "Will was getting really hit on by this girl at a party and it was getting quite uncomfortable because he couldn't shake her off."He was being really polite, but this girl just didn't get the hint."All of a sudden Kate came up behind him and put her arms around him."He said 'Oh, sorry, but I've got a girlfriend', and he and Kate went off giggling."William was very grateful for her help, Laura said.He mouthed "thanks so much" to her afterwards.Laura added: "Kate was the only girl in the room who could have done that.
