One year ago today worshippers had gathered in two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, to pray. As they came together in what should have been a space filled with love, a gunman opened fire and 51 lives were lost.

Brenton Tarrant is accused of carrying out the murders on March 15, 2019. He has pleaded not guilty to all the charges against him and is due to stand trial this May.

In an attack broadcast live on Facebook, a lone gunman armed with semi-automatic weapons targeted Muslims attending Friday prayers in the city.

It was New Zealand's worst peace time mass shooting. Since then, New Zealand banned all military-style semi-automatic weapons and assault rifles.
