How pockets became a feminist fashion issue

V&A, and the South Kensington museum is full of visitors immersing themselves in style and design. But causing a commotion in one corner is a ‘pocket protest’ – where people are urged to redress the lack of functional pockets in women’s fashion by sewing oversized patch pockets on to their clothes.

One woman theatrically attempts to squeeze her hand into her jeans’ token front pocket: ‘Look at my stupid, tiny pocket – I love the idea.’ Another also volunteers, saying, ‘I don’t have enough pockets!

I want more pockets!’ The event in September, hosted by the south London-based sewing-kit start-up Pattern Project, saw visitors sew more than 200 statement pockets on to their clothes.
