Ukrainian armed forces claim to have found a huge mass grave containing the bodies of 440 people after they liberated the area from Russia.
The city of Izyum in the Kharkiv region has recently fallen back into the hands of defending forces. After the horrendous find, a top cop has pledged that all bodies will be exhumed and examined forensically, the Mirror reports. READ MORE: 'Tense' Queen encounter caused by corgi puppy recalled by Nicola SturgeonChief police investigator Serhii Bolvinov told Sky News said that all the bodies found at the site had been buried individually.Officials are also understood to be aware of a number of other burial sites.Large-scale investigations have been being carried out by Ukrainian authorities including cops and prosecutors, following large numbers of reports of war crimes taking place in the Kharkiv region.Kharkiv region Mr Bolvinov said: "I can say that there is one of the biggest burials in one liberated city, which contains more than 440 graves."Some 440 bodies were buried in one place."He said the causes of death appeared to vary - from artillery and other explosives to having been shot dead.For many of the bodies, the cause of death is unclear - some have also not been identified.Mr Bolvinov said: "For me, it was especially shocking and horrific and this is a crime against humanity.
It shouldn't be like this in a civilised world in 2022.“This is such a horrendous story and unpleasant from any angle. I am confident that the evil will definitely be punished."In recent weeks, Russia has experienced a number of Ukrainian counterattacks that appear to have caught the invaders off guard.Russian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has claimed that some 3,090 square miles have been taken back.
