We regard macaroni cheese as American but it’s not clear where it originated. Some have ascribed it to Thomas Jefferson, who apparently sampled a similar dish in Italy and wanted to recreate it back home.
Baked dishes of pasta with cheese certainly featured in Italian books as early as the 14th century. Others have suggested it was brought from England with colonial settlers.
