F1 commission had been expected to see plans approved for the 2023 season but, despite getting agreement from the teams who have previously put a spanner in the works, another problem has emerged. The FIA, who have one-third of the voting power, have placed another stumbling block in front of the proposals by halting proceedings and declaring they were 'evaluating the impact of the proposal on its trackside operations and personnel'.

That is understood to have irked a number of teams, who had unanimously agreed to the proposals, and were left surprised by the FIA's stance - which is said to come alongside requests for more money, with Motorsport saying one insider source described it as a 'cash grab'.The FIA already earns a pretty penny annually from Formula One, around £30.7m-a-year, with just under £800k in bonuses for every race above 20 in the season and further revenue from promoters - with an additional £2.4m received in 2022 if the F1 calendar has a record 23 races as is planned. For their part, according to the BBC, the FIA insists their request to delay was 'not entirely money-related', but it does provide an impact to ensure that each Sprint, and indeed the increasing amount of races, can be properly resourced by FIA operational staff. While there's still plenty of time for an agreement to be found and it still likely there will be more Sprint events in 2023 and beyond, it does raise concerns and bring back memories of the days where F1, under Bernie Ecclestone's leadership, seemed to be embroiled in an ongoing power battle with the FIA.HAVE YOUR SAY!
