Her start-up, Theranos, promised to upend the highly lucrative industry of blood testing in the United States. She claimed the company had pioneered a new device capable of short-circuiting the often lengthy processes used by traditional laboratories.
With a single pinprick, Theranos would miraculously produce almost instantaneous results, accelerating the ability of hospitals, surgeons and GPs to treat patients.
She vowed to “democratise healthcare” by deploying machines in chemists all over the country. Patients would simply walk in and leave.
