Emmerdale ’s Diane Sugden actress Elizabeth Estensen says ‘the time was right’ to leave the soap after 22 years. The actress will depart the Dales this week, as part of a thrilling plot which sees Diane plan to flee to Portugal with her daughter, Bernice (Samantha Giles), and pregnant granddaughter, Gabby (Rosie Bentham).
Well, until Gabby going into labour rather scuppers their plans! Off screen, the 72-year-old actress has decided to leave her Dales character behind. “For the past 22 years I have loved playing Diane Sugden - she’s kind, reliable and fiercely loyal,” she says.
