More than 20 million people across the UK are claiming benefits or State Pension from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), and that figure could rise as we head into 2022 now that all coronavirus-related financial support measures have been removed.
The DWP announced earlier this year that fraud and error in the benefits system in the UK has reached record levels, with £8.4 billion overpaid in the last financial year.
The DWP estimates that 3.9 per cent of benefits spending was overpaid during 2020/21 - the highest rate to date with some £6.3 billion of the overpayments believed to be due to fraud, primarily arising from Universal Credit claims.
