Wayne Warren won just £23,000 for becoming a darts world champion 12 months ago – and he has 'kidnapped' the trophy in protest at his slashed prize money.
While fellow Welshman Gerwyn Price banked a monster £500,000 for his maiden PDC title at Alexandra Palace last weekend, 58-year-old Warren says his treatment for winning the rival BDO crown is a “disgrace.” Although the winner's loot was advertised as £100,000 in advance of the tournament, disastrous TV income, sponsorship and ticket sales meant organisers had to cut Warren's jackpot by 77 per cent.
The BDO has since gone out of business and, for the first time since Leighton Rees won the inaugural title in 1978, there will be no world championship on their side of the alphabet divide
