A police officer who was shot dead at a London police station has been named as Matiu Ratana, known as Matt. The sergeant, originally from New Zealand, has been branded "brave and dedicated" by his heartbroken colleagues.
The 54-year-old was near retirement and has been described as a 'big friendly bear'. Sgt Ratana, who had been a member of the Metropolitan Police since 1991, was a rugby coach at East Grinstead RFC.
At 2.15am this morning the officer was shot inside Croydon Custody Centre, and was declared dead a short time later. The alleged killer had reportedly been taken to the custody suite after being arrested by two special constables. Did you come into contact with Sgt Ratana as he worked in London?
