Ingram's acting looks so bad at times here it's not even up to the level of am-dram at the village hall. One big flaw in his plan is that he seems to have felt obliged to put in a performance for the cameras at all.
As an army major, his integrity would probably have been a given as far as the viewers were concerned, meaning that instead of all the gurning, wriggling and nail-chewing he could have just opted for a military-style poker face.
Less is always more for the good performer under pressure, and many of the infamous deceivers of history gave themselves away when either arrogance and an enjoyment of fooling people or sheer over-planning resulted in over-congruent or incongruent body language displays.
