When people who dislike musicals talk about the musicals they dislike, there’s a decent chance they’re talking about musicals like The Music Man – whether they’ve ever actually ever seen The Music Man or not. Meredith Willson’s nostalgic slice of Americana was already proudly old-fashioned when it debuted in 1957, with “Seventy-Six Trombones” leading Broadway down a cornpone path that shows like the moody Carousel or the finger-snapping West Side Story were trying so hard to avoid. Not even The Beatles could make Music Man‘s lilting “Till There Was You” sound cool.

No matter what kind of story you’re trying to tell, getting two talented actors for central roles is an excellent first step. In the case of Castle in the Ground, even a premise that descends into some questionable territory is heavily mitigated by who you’re watching engage in these acts. Here, it’s Imogen Poots and Alex Wolff, with the latter having a truly tough leading role to play (the former has the best moments though, by far). The movie goes to some dark places and makes some debatable narrative decisions, but Poots and Wolff are so inherently watchable that you’re willing to forgive some of its trespasses.

Here’s the trailer for a film called Castle In The Ground, a new film which first premiered at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival. I sadly didn’t catch the film at the festival but I’ve heard good things about it after briefly talking with the cast on the red carpet as they headed into the premiere. Imogen Poots, Neve Campbell, and Alex Wolff are amongst that cast, and the film is directed by Joey Klein.

Alex Wolff spent a lot of time working with co-star Danny DeVito for Jumanji: The Next Level and had the chance to learn a thing or two from the star.

A new trailer has dropped for a film titled Bad Education, a movie that was doing the rounds at the late 2019 film festivals, including Toronto. The film will air on television – on HBO Stateside – and then on various other outlets globally. Ray Romano, Geraldine Viswanathan, Alex Wolff, and Rafael Casal are also amongst the cast of the feature, which is directed by Cory Finlay (Thoroughbreds).
