No matter what kind of story you’re trying to tell, getting two talented actors for central roles is an excellent first step. In the case of Castle in the Ground, even a premise that descends into some questionable territory is heavily mitigated by who you’re watching engage in these acts. Here, it’s Imogen Poots and Alex Wolff, with the latter having a truly tough leading role to play (the former has the best moments though, by far). The movie goes to some dark places and makes some debatable narrative decisions, but Poots and Wolff are so inherently watchable that you’re willing to forgive some of its trespasses.

Take for instance Castle in the Ground, a moderately affecting grief drama that builds a compelling intimacy and then allows it to evaporate as it lurches unpersuasively into a claustrophobic quasi-thriller set against the backdrop of the opioid crisis in Sudbury, Ontario.

Today, they team up again in a similarly unique title, though subject matter wise, it’s as different as can be. Both are terrific though, suggesting that a pairing of Eisenberg and Poots is a consistently strong recipe for success. The collaboration is in Vivarium, an exercise in weirdness that quickly becomes hypnotic. Hitting Video On Demand today, it’s another very strong option for new release viewing this weekend.
