Celebrity ex-lawyer Tom Girardi found guilty of stealing from clients: ‘Robin-Hood-in-reverse’

accused of deceiving his clients and pilfering from settlement funds they had obtained in personal injury cases.“Tom Girardi built celebrity status and lured in victims by falsely portraying himself as a ‘Champion of Justice,'” US Attorney Martin Estrada said in a statement. “In reality, he was a Robin-Hood-in-reverse, stealing from the needy” to support a “lavish, Hollywood lifestyle.”Girardi’s federal public defenders did not immediately respond to a request for comment.Girardi blamed the alleged fraud on Christopher Kamon, the former chief financial officer of their law firm Girardi Keese.

Thomas Vincet Girardi, the former ‘Housewives’ husband and disgraced lawyer, was declared competent to stand trial, paving the way for the 84-year-old to go before a jury for allegedly embezzling more than $15 million from legal clients. Following a three-day competency hearing, Judge Josephine L. Staton of the Central District of California announced her decision in a docket entry, filing an "order finding defendant competent to stand trial." Judge Staton said that her full order was filed under seal and attorneys have been given five days to identify to the judge which portions of the ruling should remain sealed.
