A boxing coach who left his former partner fearing for her life during a 'prolonged' attack claimed her injuries were caused when she had been rock climbing.

Billy McNamara, 27, launched the 'frightening' attack on his ex in her own home, after she had obtained a domestic violence protection order against him following previous behaviour.

McNamara, who has been in custody on remand since the incident in January, received a suspended sentence after a judge was told of his work in the community as a boxing coach at the gym he runs in Urmston, Trafford.

Minshull Street Crown Court heard that the couple first got together in 2017, and the relationship was initially positive. But prosecutors said McNamara's behaviour began to change months
