From wearing traffic cones on their head to nicking loo roll from pub toilets, typical student antics are never sensible. But a prank played on 20-year-old Ruth Poniarski at college was far too serious to shrug off the next day.
It almost destroyed her. It was back in 1977 when high-flying Ruth, then studying for an architecture degree, went to a small end of term party. ‘It wasn’t a wild affair, there were only about eight others there, all architecture graduates and physics PhD students,’ says Ruth, now 64. ‘People had drunk a little wine but that was it.
Everyone was heading home when a so-called friend, Joseph, produced some brownies and told me his professor’s wife had made them.
